Doctrinal Statement: Christology

I.       The Pre-existance of Christ – Since Christ is fully God, and equal with God in the Trinity, Christ has existed for all of eternity and did not come into existance at His birth (Jn. 1.1-3). Reasoning for this is Jesus equated Himself with the Father (Jn. 10.31), and He had to be present at the creation of the universe since scripture claims He was involved in creation (Jn 1.3, Hb 1.2, Col. 1.16).

II.    The Incarnation of Christ – The word incarnation means that Jesus came in the flesh. In order to fulfill prophecy and save mankind, Jesus came to Earth in the form of a Human.

a.      The Virgin Birth – The virgin birth is the means by which Jesus came into the world (Is. 7.14; 9.6). Reasons for the virgin birth include: to avoid receiving the sin nature through the seed of the man; to fulfill prophecy; and to alleviate the problem of the curse of Jeconiah. Since Joseph was of the line of Jeconiah (who was cursed by God to never have the messiah come through his line [Jer. 22.30]), Jesus could not have any blood relation to His earthly father (Mary was also of the line of David).

b.     The Purpose of the Incarnation – There are several reasons for the Incarnation of Christ: For God to speak to humanity today (Heb1.1,2); to be an example for humanity (1 Pet. 2:21; 1 Jn 2.6); to be a sacrifice for sins (Hb. 10.1-10). To be a qualified judge of humanity (Jn. 5.22,27)

III. The Person of Christ

a.      His Full Deity – Jesus was fully God. Jesus claimed equality with the Father. Throughout His ministry Jesus knew things that only an omniscient being could know (Mt. 16.21; Lk. 6.8, 11.17; Jn. 4.29). He also did many works that only God could perform. Such as forgiving sins (Mk. 2.1-12)

b.     His Full Humanity – Jesus was also fully human. He grew hungry (Mt. 4.2). He became thirsty (Jn. 19.28). He became saddened when His friends died (Jn. 11.35).

IV. The Sinlessness of Christ – Scripture attests that Jesus knew no sin (2 Cor. 5.21). Not only did He not know sin, He could not commit any sort of sin.

V.    The Death of Christ – Jesus died for all of humanity (Jn. 3.16). The extent of His death reaches all people regardless of whether they believe in Him or not. 2 Peter 2.1 is clear in stating that Jesus died for unbelievers.

VI. The Resurrection of Christ – The resurrection is the proof of the Christian faith (1 Cor. 15.13-19). It is the object of our preaching today.

VII.          The Ascension of Christ – After His resurrection, Jesus ascended into Heaven. It ended Christ’s ministry on Earth and marked the beginning of His priestly ministry in Heaven. Jesus had to leave so that He could send the Holy Spirit. The angels that appeared afterwards gave the promise that Jesus would return in the same manner that He left.
